November 2019 Update Video

Novembers video includes some great updates. The project has really begun take shape and is actually starting to look like a game.

Note: All character data, inventory data and string data is gathered directly from actual Ultima save and data files

A few key changes/improvements in the November update

  • Shifted to a classic isometric angle
  • Completed remaining sprite conversions to 3D model equivalents
  • Upgraded lighting engine

  • Implemented HUD with player characters, basic item quantities and current location (also added time into HUD!)
  • Implemented new Location tracking in HUD

NPC Chat

  • Reimplemented UI for NPC conversations with common look and feel

  • Implemented signs (no runes yet!)

Inventory System

  • Implemented basic inventory system

Basic Function

  • K-limb fences and mountains
  • O-pening doors
  • J-immy’ing doors
  • Space – pass time
  • G-et torches from wall
  • Porcullis drop at night

Next month brings on some new challenges I think. I will continue to work on equipping weapons and armour… you know honestly I’m not sure what else I will do – I just kind of work on the thing that most interests me that day or if I’m short on time, I just fix a bug and move on.

  1. Just keeps getting better and better! Love all the voxels you have created. Particularly the standing shop signs, the furniture, wheat…you’ve really captured the essence of the originals.
The new isometric view is definitely an improvement. Just looks cleaner and more logical. Does it make walking east west north south strange when using the directional keys?
The layout of the interface is certainly getting fleshed out, though I hope for some nice voxelly borders (with shading?) eventually.
Ignore negative, pointless criticism. The fact is you are doing this, spending your time and creative energy on this, with no compensation. You can do whatever you want with it. Many people will appreciate your work very much.
I look very much forward to your next update.

    1. Thank you for the kind words. I will be providing a money back guarantee lol

As for the direction confusion – the answer is sadly yes. I found it quite disorienting a first. I’ve grown used to it so I barely notice – but I suspect at some point I will have to offer configurable camera presets or perhaps a bake off once I get a compiled binary out for testing.

As for pixel borders, it’s likely for sure that I will try to incorporate some. My early UI drafts included them but I just couldn’t make them appealing. There is an odd issue with Unity where I can’t (easily) use 3D textures on UI elements (the signs were hell), so I may need to do some baking in Blender for the borders.

      1. That sounds good. Always enjoyed that effect in the original.
Regarding lighting, or the lack thereof, have you any plans for implementing LOS/raycasting functions?

      2. Two things scare the shit out of me – LOS/raycasting and pathfinding. I am not looking forward to either of them but know I will have to sooner than later. I was going to try to emulate U5s LOS mechanic instead of raycasting to make sure I don’t accidentally reveal anything the creators meant to conceal through their LOS algorithm. I am actually concerned about how the lighting will or will not hold up when I implement it as well – but I will just procrastinate for now and start it when I feel like having an exceptional challenge ๐Ÿ™‚

      3. Yes, tried my hand at raycasting before and it is…daunting.
But I imagine that with the sweet lighting effects you already have in, it should look great, while providing support for the original’s mechanics.

  2. Ok man I see this project and have some demands for this project because I am a self important rando off of the internet. First I demand that you get a patron going so I can throw some money at you for support. And I also demand that you do this for Ultima 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 because this is the coolest remake that I have ever seen!
Seriously though this really is an amazing project.

    1. Lol! I have resisted that Patreon because I want to make it entirely a passion project. A fun way to give back ๐Ÿ™‚

If I am not completely sick of Ultima by the end of development – perhaps I could consider an earlier Ultima ๐Ÿ™‚ They only get easier to remake right?? Right??!?!
